[SCAM] Binance: Beware of fake calls

There seems to be a big wave of fake Binance advisor scam attempts.

I got a call today, and two of my three brothers were also contacted in recent days, so it seems massive.

These two phone numbers are affected, but there are surely many others: 0568143873 , and 0187681322.

Somehow, all or part of Binance’s customer database is out there and is being exploited by scammers. You hear every week about new “data leaks” from large companies or administrations. It’s not so much the data loss that’s critical, but the scam attempts that follow. This example with Binance is a perfect illustration.

The scenario: I receive a call from a French landline number, my caller, who speaks perfect French, without an accent, introduces themselves as working for Binance’s cybersecurity department.

Being a bit savvy, I know that Binance NEVER calls its customers, so I immediately understand it’s a scam attempt.Binance scamBut it’s still plausible because I have a Binance account. Instead of hanging up immediately, I decide to continue the conversation to see how the scam is conducted.

They ask if my email address is [email protected]: I confirm.

It’s quite formidable because it builds trust: I do have a Binance account, they have my phone number, my email address, so they must be a Binance employee!

My caller then explains that there was an attempted login and email address change from the Netherlands.

I reply that it wasn’t me.

They then ask if I’ve recently been abroad, if I’ve used a public wifi network, a VPN, … That’s also very clever: it’s highly likely you fall into one of these cases, which will further legitimize them.

While I’m expecting them to ask me to log into my account, so they can try to get me to make a transfer, they simply explain that they’ve blocked the login, and that I’ll receive an email to confirm the block.

And that’s it, the fake advisor apologizes for bothering me and wishes me a good day. It’s formidable, they didn’t ask for any sensitive information, and in principle, they seem trustworthy.

The only thing is I never received their email, so I couldn’t go through with the scam attempt. But it’s 100% certain that email is phishing, which will try to steal your password or install a virus on your device.

The simplest thing if you receive a call from Binance is to hang up right away!
