Stray dogs in India, Nepal and Myanmar

During our stays in India, Nepal and Burma, we are struck by the number of stray dogs we come across in the streets. This is a scene that we no longer see in other Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam or China, where dogs are eaten and teams supplying the dogs to restaurants “clean” the streets by kidnapping all the dogs that have the misfortune of hanging around in the street, whether they belong to someone or not.Fortunately, the religious fervor observed in India, Nepal and Burma also has a consequence in saving the lives of many stray dogs. They don’t hurt them, but they don’t take care of them either. The concept of having pets, to love them, does not exist for these countries. The few times we have seen non-errant dogs, it was when they were chained, serving as guard dogs.In those countries where rabies exists, I obviously do not advise you to make friends with stray dogs. It is possible to feed them but do so when there is only one dog. I have noticed that when there are several, the dogs look at each other and do not dare to touch the food for fear of being attacked by one of the dogs present. If you want to feed several dogs at the same time, give each one a piece so there will be no jealousy. Of course, before feeding them, make sure that you aren’t poisoning them. Chocolate, for example, is poisonous to them. They are fearful so they won’t risk coming to give you a big kiss to thank you.In India and Nepal, dogs seem to be rather solitary. In Burma on the other hand, we can see packs of dogs together. Fights are frequent, especially when a bitch is in heat and the suitors are numerous.
