It’s March, it’s 8°C in Paris and it’s raining. Ideal conditions to test my new Uniqlo Ultra Light Down comforter (70€), essential for my icy nights in Patagonia, Nepal and South Africa. Here is the official description of the product: This warm parka is incredibly thin and light. It has a high collar and a hood. The outer lining is water resistant, and the water repellent yarn prevents moisture from seeping into the seams. It has a beautiful patina finish in bright colors for a sporty and feminine look with a seductive look. Its edges are reinforced for durability. Elastic cuffs and waistband provide effective protection from cold winds. It’s…

Montevideo (Uruguay): a carnival like no other

Coming to Montevideo in the middle of the carnival isn’t necessarily a very good idea for the wallet Coming to Montevideo during the last week of carnival is like being in Paris during the week of August 15th Everything is expensive, and everything is closed And since we didn’t know enough (not at all?), we went to Montevideo during the last week of the carnival (i.e. the last week of February this year, in 2017) Part 1: Travel Diary Part 2: Practical Tips Part 1: Travel Diary We have already told you how we almost slept in the street because we couldn’t find a hotel available. Luckily, for the next…

Our misadventures on the first day in Uruguay

We are getting more and more m*rde, a sign that after 9 months of mop, we are starting to get tired We take a bus from Iguazú to Concordia (Argentina), a city 1 hour drive from Uruguay. We plan to cross the border to spend a night in Salto (Uruguay) This “shortest way” (going to Uruguay from the border in the North-West instead of going all the way down to Buenos Aires -> Montevideo) finally attracts us more trouble than anything else The day before, a little research showed us that there was only one hotel left in Salto, or expensive hotels next to the thermal springs next door. Thinking…

The Iguaçu / Iguazú Falls (Brazil & Argentina): a wonder of nature

The Iguazú Falls are one of the most extraordinary experiences we had during our world tour. We will easily classify them in the top 10 of our trip Part 1 : The Iguaçu falls on the Brazilian side How to get there How we come from Paraguay, we choose to spend a night in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, at the IguassuCentral Bed & Breakfast hotel, which I highly recommend since it is next to all the buses and good restaurants. From the city bus terminal near our hotel, we take the famous bus 120 towards Iguaçu National Park, for 3,75 reals/person. This bus is very busy, both by locals,…

Paraguay-Brazil border and visit the Iguazu Falls from Ciudad del Este

Part 1: How to cross the Paraguay-Brazil border? Ciudad del Este – Foz do Iguaçu Ciudad del Este is a shopping paradise for Brazilians and Argentines, and everything has been done to make their shopping experience the best possible (themed shopping malls, several currencies accepted, bilingual staff…). The Paraguay-Brazil border crossing is super easy for Paraguayans, Argentines and Brazilians For other countries, you will need, in addition, two stamps Note: if you do not plan to spend a night in Brazil, you aren’t obliged to ask for exit/entry stamps. The Iguazu Falls on the Brazilian side can be visited in a few hours, you can possibly stay in Ciudad del…

Visit Paraguay in 9 days: Travel Guide, assessment, itinerary, tips, tricks

Paraguay was added to our itinerary on a whim: the result of our research to connect Bolivia to Iguazú or Buenos Aires. We armed ourselves with Google Flights and Google Maps and both confirmed that Paraguay was the place to be. Being still very little tourist (there is no must-see like the salar of Uyuni or the falls of Iguazu), Paraguay is one of the places allowing to take advantage of the carnival way South America at small price. Balance sheet Overall, we rather enjoyed our stay in Paraguay. Apart from the heat (reaching 41°C at the end of February), it’s a country where we see ourselves living between 1…

Ciudad del Este (Paraguay): beyond rumors

The news about Paraguay is frankly not up to date. On blogs, Ciudad del Este is talked about as a dangerous or chaotic city. Even if it has less charm than Encarnacion, Ciudad del Este is neither dangerous nor chaotic. Part 1: Travel Diary Part2: Practical Tips Part 1: Travel Diary Day 1 : The route Encarnacion – Ciudad del Este is a total #fail. All this because we let our guard down, we simply asked for information from a salesman at the terminal who showed us another ticket salesman and we ended up at the Sao Juan company. The guy sold us tickets for a 7am departure. And then…

Encarnacion (Paraguay): carnival & Jesuit ruins of Trinidad

If we are in Paraguay, it is mainly to attend the famous carnival in Encarnacion, a border town with Argentina that has absolutely no border town look. Part 1: Travel Diary Part2: Practical Tips Part 1: Travel Diary Day 1 : The trip to Encarnacion is an endless series of #fail. Even if there isn’thing serious, it just shows that we are a little tired of moving all the time, under an overwhelming heat as a bonus, and are less demanding in our choices. We take the bus with NSA from Asuncion at 1:30 pm, for 6 hours. Arriving at the terminal, we take a cab to a hotel reserved…
