[Thoughts] #7: Working on the first impression, The elevator pitch

When you are interested in personal development, there are many ways to do it: read specialized books, pay a coach, do meditation etc. but I am lucky enough to have stumbled upon “a textbook case”: Matthew Hussey, a “self-proclaimed dating guru”. He has no qualifications, no references, one day he created his YouTube account to help women find their soul mate, he released a book (which became a New York Times bestseller) and since then, he hangs out with several “Hollywood A-list stars”, he gives several times a year a 3-day seminar where women pay 6000$ to listen to his advice – only to find no husband in the end.

I am particularly interested in his case because his enormous strength is being able to create an unforgettable first impression, which he calls “TO HAVE IMPACT”.
This is something I find difficult to do and which I screw up every time, especially with my clients. They often have doubts at the beginning, which disappear as soon as they see the quality of my work. But it’s especially important to give a good first impression to my prospects, especially since I’m freelance AND nomadic AND a woman AND of foreign origin 😀

Let’s go back to Matthew Hussey: he had the courage to go behind the scenes of his radio interview, where he charmed EVERYONE with an anecdote to die for… it looks like he came up with it out of the blue. Then, we discover that all this was prepared beforehand. Whatever the question asked by the host, he would have tried by all means to direct the conversation towards this anecdote.

Thus, the first impression is something you have to workon. Always!

I don’t remember who advised me to work on my “elevator pitch”, i.e. if I was in the elevator with an investor/my big boss/a CEO, in 30s (by the time he got to his floor), I had to be able to create a good first impression and arouse his interest.

So did you work on your elevator pitch?
