My Trip to London

An article from 2009, when I visited London for the first time.I came back yesterday evening. I spent half a day at the airport, 4 hours in different trains and buses and 2 hours on the plane.
I am very happy to have come to London. I had so many prejudices about this “weird” country (according to the French) that London was not on the list of cities to visit in priority. These 7 days in London made me fall in love with this city (not yet with the English, because I didn’t know how to differentiate the tourists from the English). I must admit that the “look right”, “look left” helped me a lot, and probably saved my life several times.
As it was the first time that my two feet were in a 100% English-speaking territory, I took advantage of it to buy books in English at the price indicated on the book, and not the price multiplied by 15 + 25% tax as in Norway or at Gilbert’s in the 5th. As the book is at the lowest price and my Norwegian credit card is great (very advantageous conversion rate for any purchase in any country + minimal charge (less than 1% I think)), I went shopping anyway. Results: I have enough to read for a year !
To make it cheaper, I set foot in London on December 26th. Boxing Day!! Where discounts were already at -70%. Perfumes in department stores at -50%. A real happiness! And then, on December 31st in the evening, we went to see the fireworks on a bridge. An Englishman kindly left me his place, since I was too small to see well. It was one of the best fireworks of my life! We went back by subway. 0 problem.

What I liked the most

  • Fireworks
  • Boxing Day
  • Ben’s Cookies
  • Tower of London
  • The subway (London Underground or The Tube), rather clean, convenient, even if a little expensive

What I liked the least

  • Clothes (importable for me and too expensive)
  • The weather forecast
