[Mayenne] Sainte-Suzanne, Night in a caravan & Tree house – Road Trip in France #26

While we had the heat wave for the duration of our vacation, the rain fell on us, as if to signify the end of the vacations.

Part 1: Travel Diary

A short round trip to Paris

During the 3.5 days in Tours, as I have less work than JB, I took the opportunity to make the round trip to Paris in one day. I find it very frustrating not to live in Paris anymore. Every time I want to go there, I have to plan, schedule appointments… whereas I used to decide the same day and take the subway and do what I want. Going to Paris now becomes an important trip.
So in one day, I stalled: a little cuddle session with Rosalie (the cat), lunch with my sister, and a kobido massage at Véronique’s, my favorite facialist

My skin is destroyed after this road trip, between sun, mask and sweat. So I took advantage of having a fixed address for a few days to place a small order just before our departure to Rome.

I also searched the basement (I left my stuff at JB’s parents’ house) and found my homemade jewelry. All of this was shown to you in my Instagram stories, but I’m leaving it here again.

It makes us too much pleasure to see our friends in Tours again, so we really have difficulty to leave. It rains a lot when we finally decide to leave Tours to spend our last days of vacations in Mayenne.

Sainte-Suzanne-et-Chammes

We arrive at the end of the day in Sainte-Suzanne, a “most beautiful village of France”, dominated by its pretty castle.

The castle is in ruins, but many footbridges are installed to give access to the different viewpoints.

Night in trailer

We sleep tonight in this trailer. Everything is powered by solar energy. I told JB that I didn’t want a dry toilet but since it wasn’t clearly indicated on the site, what do I see when I arrive? A dry toilet! But surprise: it doesn’t smell bad(EDIT from JB: Anh had asked me “no chemical toilets”. Contract respected: they are dry toilets). It’s well integrated and it looks like a normal toilet (I specify because I saw on TV dry toilets in wooden huts and frankly it made me want to run away). Moreover, there is a toilet block 20 meters away, for the shower, real toilets and the sink. We are saved!!

I, who watched the whole season “Tiny House” on Netflix, now I feel in a concrete case aahhaha. Honestly, a trailer with a terrace for two, it’s not that small, it’s even big. There is even a small space to cook + the fridge. This kind of construction can be completely installed on a land that cannot be built on. JB looked at it and there are some constructions more accomplished than that, with a real bathroom. The problem is how to bring water and electricity when the land isn’t constructible. But hey.

We are in a farm so there are animals everywhere, some are rescues (horses for example which were destined for the slaughterhouse). We can hear them well, they are very talkative. The horses are really cute and let themselves be stroked. The breakfast of the farm (too good) is served in a small basket.

While I tell myself “too well, I can live in a trailer”, at night I get bitten by an unidentified insect and end up with a swollen leg and arms (because I scratched). The swollen part becomes all red and a little hot on top of that. I search everything to determine the insect in question but I can’t find it. It’s the 3rd time that it happens to me since we travel and this time, I’m fed up. I think that this insect injected me a little depression too. Instead of asking for help to our doctor friend, who could have prescribed me antihistamines, I said to myself “screwed for screwed, let’s leave it to nature”. So I spent the rest of my vacation with a half swollen leg. Besides, you can feel it too ahaha because the red part is huge and very hot, not practical to walk.

Saint Céneri le Gérei

This is the village that I liked very much, that we visited during our mini road trips near Rouen. This time, we intend to settle down and eat a pancake in the tea room (at 2 pm), but we are being chased everywhere. Restaurants only want to serve salty food, even if their restaurant is half empty. It seems that the rain makes people nervous.

We find ourselves, with all the other tourists who have been turned away too, in the only café in the area. At least, we are in the warmth and well received: DOn
goes until the church (that we couldn’t visit the last time) to take advantage of the view
.

I am horrified to see a “honeycomb protected” sign and right next to it, a trap against bees! It’s disgusting! It’s like putting a trap right in front of my house door, it’s cowardly!

Cabin in the woods

Today is JB’s birthday and we decide to treat ourselves to a special experience: sleeping in the trees. We’ve been to this farm before, but last time we were in a normal bed and breakfast. This time, we choose the highest hut (there are two of them), at 7 meters high.

It’s good to see our guests again, we only met once but we are delighted to see them again and know that they are still in good health. The Mayenne was declared a covid “cluster” not long ago, and when we asked them the question, they answered that there were a few cases among the young people indeed, but as there are a hundred inhabitants in all, it makes a huge contamination rate => cluster.

This time, JB will take advantage of the heated pool. And being warm in the trees, while it rains outside, did me a lot of good. Here, we have a real bathroom, phew!
I love this hut too much! I will return there, it is sure!

To book this hut, here is the Expedia link of the hut for couple (110€)

The end of the road trip

We take the car back to Rouen, and have enough time to wash it, fill it up. In all, we have done 5000km in 4 weeks !
5000 is much more than our road trip in New Zealand.

During the inventory, the small scratches we were worried about on the bumpers were not taken into account (too small) but they saw big scratches on the rim. I don’t know how we couldn’t pass by these big scratches and notice the smaller ones on the bumper, but hey. That’s a little more than 300€ of repairs to pay to Leclerc, which were finally covered by our Serenitrip insurance.

Our friend A. picks us up at Leclerc’s and we have lunch with his little family. We will miss them too much. We used to see them every 2 weeks when we were in Rouen. Their son probably won’t understand why Anh and JB suddenly disappear. One detail that we thought was too cute is that he didn’t understand that Anh and JB are two different people, he thinks that we are both called “Anh and JB”, it’s too cute.

Wow, this is already the end of our road trip. I’m relieved to have finished the 26 travel diaries ! Thank you for following us, you are very brave to have read everything. For the roadtrip recap article (with detailed itinerary & budget), go here.

See you soon for new adventures!
