Chiang Rai (Thailand): Visit of the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), Wat Phra Kaeo, Flower Festival & Night Bazaar

When I am told about the North of Thailand, I immediately think of the white temple (Wat Rong Khun) that I have seen in all the travel guides. This is one of the reasons why we came to Chiang Mai, which is only 3 hours away from this famous temple. Part 1: Travel Diary Part 2: Practical Tips Part 1: Travel Diary Bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai we had to take a 3h bus from the Bus Station Terminal 3. We queue in front of GreenBus to buy the tickets, it’s 9:40 am but the next bus with free seats doesn’t leave until 11 am. We are asked…

Our first days in Chiang Mai (Thailand)

After a month of happiness in Siem Reap, we take the road again, direction Chiang Mai Part 1: Travel Diary Part 2: Practical Tips Part 1: Travel Diary How to go from Siem Reap to Chiang Mai? We could have taken 2 flights with a stopover in Bangkok, but unfortunately this will also mean paying twice for the luggage in the hold (which are usually optional with low cost airlines). We decide to take a bus to Bangkok, then a plane to Chiang Mai from Bangkok The travel agency told us about 7h30, maximum 8 hours of travel, but the reality is quite different. It is thus a little surprised…

Moving to Thailand: Nothing could be easier

During our stay in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, we had the opportunity to discuss at length with two of our fellow expatriates in Thailand and we took the opportunity to ask them all the questions concerning the life in Thailand. This article is therefore a summary of our discussions. Note: some information is no longer up to date, read the comments at the bottom of the article for the latest information about visas and buying apartments Visa The work visa is very easy to obtain… if you have a job. Your employer will take care of it for you. If you don’t have a job (you are retired for example),…

Bangkok (Thailand): Return after 1 year

As it is cold in Europe (even in Seville), it is time for us to find some sun in Asia. From Seville to Bangkok We ran a simulation to find out which route was the most economical to link Spain and Siem Reap. Result: Barcelona – Bangkok. Since we liked the city last year, we decided to stay there for a week before going to Cambodia. Honestly I don’t know if it was a good idea: we had to fly from Seville to Barcelona, sleep there one night, then Barcelona to Moscow (3h45 stopover) and then Moscow to Bangkok – in a small plane where even I am cramped. It…

Prepaid 4G SIM card in Thailand: how much does it cost? Where to buy it?

Where to buy a prepaid SIM card at the Bangkok airport? After passing through immigration, collecting your luggage and going through customs, look for a store that offers prepaid SIM cards. The most visible store is the one of the operator TrueMove H but there are competing stores not too far away. Where to buy a prepaid SIM card in the city? SIM cards are also available in 7 Eleven, Tesco Lotus, Fresh Mart and FamillyMart stores. There are 7 Eleven stores everywhere and they are open 24 hours a day. EDIT: With a friend who arrived late in Bangkok, we made several 7 Eleven to try to buy a…

17 days in Thailand: Our itinerary, Country Travel Guide & Budget

Thailand has been added to the list for a simple reason of cost: the plane ticket between Kathmandu and Mandalay is too expensive. Going through Bangkok reduces this cost by -50%. That’s how we found ourselves for two weeks in Thailand, a country we have never visited before but from which we heard so much good that we had to check it out for ourselves. We went there in August 2016, in the middle of the monsoon. Here is our itinerary for 17 days Bangkok (2 nights) : Late arrival in the evening. We could only visit Wat Po. The rest of the time was spent shopping, eating and eating…

Krabi (Thailand) – false airs of Halong Bay

Part 1: Travel Diary Part 2: Practical Tips Part 1: Travel Diary The “joint ticket” bought via our hotel allows us to reach Krabi from Koh Phangan in 5h30. We get up early, the cab of the boat company waits for us at 6 am. On the way, we cross a Canadian who stops the cab. She is in her fifties, she travels alone, she goes like us to Krabi but has reserved neither cab nor boat. A true adventurer! In front of so much nerve, a Swedish woman next to us asks her how she would have done if there was no cab, to which she answers that there…

Koh Phangan (Thailand) – a little piece of paradise

The boat Koh Tao – Koh Phangan is late. It’s always a bazaar at the port, people leave Koh Tao to go to a dozen of tourist sites, but somehow, as if by magic, all these people still manage to get on a boat that arrives safely We sit at the very top of the boat, our hair in the wind. It rains a little bit, it’s windy. We see very threatening clouds which finally remain far from Koh Phangan, our new paradise Part 1: Travel Diary Part 2: Practical Tips Part 1: Travel Diary Arrived on Koh Phangan island, we take a mini bus (called a cab anyway) for…

Koh Tao (Thailand) – the snorkelling paradise

The trip from Bangkok to Koh Tao takes 11 hours, including waiting. We wait for an hour for our night bus at the station, without worrying too much however because it is raining and the delay is foreseeable. However, the organization is far from being their strong point. We have to harass several people to know which bus we take The ticket we have is an all inclusive ticket: bus to Chumphorn + boat to Koh Tao. The bus leaves Bangkok at 8pm with only one rest stop at midnight. It’s very comfortable, quiet but it’s very cold (air conditioning in Asia is always a big problem). Luckily we took…
