[The Return] Round-the-world budget (3/3): Management after a round-the-world trip
This article is the last of the articles dealing with the round-the-world budget.

This article concerns, as you say, the management of the budget after the round-the-world trip.
Part 1: How much money should be prepared after the round-the-world trip?
The “survival” budget after a round-the-world trip is normally already taken into account BEFORE you leave. In our case, we have set aside an envelope of 5000€ to cover the first months after the round-the-world trip, namely :
- temporary rental of an apartment in Paris (between 1000 and 1300€/month +500€ deposit)
- food: a lot of restaurants because our friends all want to see us
This envelope is calculated according to :
- our usual expenses in France
- the price of temporary rental of an apartment in Paris
- our professional situations: JB being on sabbatical, if we were really badly off financially, at least one salary was assured
If two of you have resigned, this envelope should, of course, be increased.
Part 2: How to save money
After the round-the-world tour, consider cutting the following services:
- travel insurance – 45€ per month
- traveler’s mail (if you subscribe to it, like us) – 10€ per month
- international option at the bank – 17€ per month
- visa Premier or MasterCard Gold cards (to switch back to a normal card) – 8€ per month
- international phone option (if you subscribe to it) – 5€ per month
That is 85€ saved per month per person.
Then, check your miles obtained during your world tour and see how you can turn them into either a hotel room or a flight.
Part 3: How to make money
Unless you’re going on a world tour, most of your world tour stuff is no longer useful. But they are very valuable. Think of reselling on Le Bon Coin (my tips and advices to sell well on Le Bon Coin here) :
- your backpacks – a priori, after a trip around the world, you have learned the notion of minimalism. Thus, you will no longer leave for a 3-week vacation with the same bag used for your world tour. So you might as well resell it.
- your superfluous things: in the same way, you will look at your things kept for a year at your relatives in France with a new filter “why did I keep this ugly one, already? Take the opportunity to resell them, or give them away.
- monetize your blog: after a year around the world, if you blog assiduously, you surely have a nice blog with qualified content.
On our side, we have added a small Google Adsense banner super discreet, but some bloggers have well monetized theirs by signing partnership contracts with insurers or travel agencies. More info on our blog’s revenues here
Perhaps the trip around the world has made you want to change your life, your profession. Travelling around the world has given us many ideas. If we kept our job, just by changing employer (we are freelancers now – by the way we explain here how we find our customers and our adventure as Digital Nomads)
We know that, if one day we run out of money, we can always set up (1) a foodtruck of personalized pizzas (like in Uruguay ) (2) set up an agency that only books train tickets to India (3) a breakdown service for those who have had their passport/bank card/ID stolen (4) a mini storage box in Asia to receive gifts from relatives or to find your favorite products after xx months of travel (5) The Good Bis Corner only for travelers…
After that, we start again, we put money aside for a second, third, n-th round-the-world trip!
