How to resell your books, CDs, DVDs
Before the round-the-world tour, we had to empty our apartment and resell almost all our belongings.
For books, CDs, DVDs, we have tried different methods. We will list them here and recommend a plan of action if, like us, you want to empty everything at a reasonable price. For info, we were able to sell all our books & DVDs (even though we don’t have a crazy library), for 350€.
Gibert stores

Method :
- Either you go directly to the store: You show up at Gibert’s with your stock of books/CD/DVDs. In this case, you can be paid on the spot. Attention you must come with your identity card.
- Or you first enter the ISBN codes of the items online. The result is instantaneous: you know if an article can be taken back and for what amount. You can then bring them to the store (deposit in store) or send them by parcel (you will be paid less). You will receive your payment a few days later.
Advantages: Possibility to have an idea of the resale price. There are 2 Gibert stores: Gibert Joseph and Gibert Jeune. If a book is refused by Gibert Joseph, it is possible that it is accepted by Gibert Jeune because they do not have the same stock. You can be paid more if the payment is transferred directly to your Gibert loyalty card.
The – : Items must be irreproachable, in addition to having the quotation (the quotation of items depends on supply and demand). In general, old books or old movies do not have a good rating. Travel books that are too old will not be accepted anywhere. If you send the books by parcel and they are refused, to retrieve the books you have to pay a return postage fee. In store, you have to allow a lot of time for waiting because some people arrive with 300 books!
Our experience: Some items indicated as accepted on the site aren’t accepted in the store (because on the site, books are taken back for the whole Gibert network while books deposited at Gibert Saint Michel for example will be taken back according to the stock of that particular store). For books, textbooks aren’t very popular. My old CDs have not been accepted. Recent novels, comics are successful.
Momox

Method: You create an account, you enter the ISBN codes of the items for sale. If you accept the proposed price, you click on “add to cart”. Momox (link) will send you some slips to print to send by Colissimo the books you want to sell. If your books are accepted, you will receive the payment by bank transfer.
The plusses: A mobile application allows you to scan book codes rather than enter them by hand. They accept more foreign language books than Gibert Joseph.
Thedownside: You need a minimum of €10 in estimated selling price to be able to send your books. If the books sent are refused (damaged book for example), to get them back, you have to pay 15€ return postage. They prefer to send everything in one parcel, I had to put my parcel in a suitcase to go to the post office, so heavy it was.
Our experience: Some books refused at Gibert’s were accepted by Momox. Foreign and little-known books are more likely to be sold on Momox. An email was sent to us as soon as we received the package. And another mail, to tell us that all the books were well accepted. Anyway, I recommend, you can start by creating your account here

Priceminister
Method: You create an account, search for the book you have by its title and then click on “Sell yours”. Indicate the price at which you wish to sell. Individuals buy your items and you will receive an email notification for each sale made. You prepare the package and post the item via La Poste. For each sale, PriceMinister pays the seller a lump sum to participate in the shipping costs of the item. This lump sum varies according to the type of product sold and the shipping method chosen by the buyer when placing the order. You can keep the money on your Priceminister account or you can receive the payment by bank transfer.
Pros: Possibility to sell books/DVD/CDs in average condition and set the price you wantPs
:
You have to be patient, especially if you are selling items that aren’t in goodcondition, in
addition to taking care of sending the items by mail. There is a charge on the final selling price.
Our experience: Sales are very low, unless you are selling hyper-rated books. Besides, preparing the parcels and going to the post office just to earn 1€ more quickly becomes tiring. However, for rare books, it can be worth it.
The Good Corner
Method: You create a free account & ads on the site. You take a picture of your item and set the price you want.
The plusses: You set your price. There is no charge. You can sell even items in poor condition. The hand delivery is privileged on Le Bon CoinLes
: If you post your phone number, it is the guarantee to be harassed on the phone. Like Priceminister, if items aren’t listed, sales will drop off. DVDs, in particular, aren’t very successful, except for BluRay.
Our experience: A real failure for books & DVDs despite the low price. More about The Good Corner here
Boulinier Store
Method: You bring your books, CDs and DVDs directly to the store. The books are for sale on the ground floor and the CDs/DVDs on the 1st floor. They really take everything (ideal for those who just want to get rid of the books), unless it’s really in bad condition.
The + : They take everythingThe
– : The price. 10 DVDs for 2€ I let you draw the conclusion. At the same time, they resell the books at 1€, the DVDs at 3.5€. Personally, I’m already happy that they take my books and DVDs. I prefer that rather than throwing them in the trash.
Our experience: Books refused everywhere else have been accepted at Boulinier, except for two DVDs with notes on them. The welcome is very pleasant and smiling.
Our advice
Here are our tips to optimize the sale of your books. The goal is still to empty your apartment so be prepared to give/lose your books. Remember, it can cost you more to keep your stuff than to give it away.
- Sell the rarest and highest rated items (a DVD that just came out, a book that just won a prize…) on Priceminister & Le bon coin at a competitive price
- Check which books can be taken back to Gibert (by entering the code of each book, I know it’s long). Go to Gibert’s to sell them at the store (attention I’m talking about selling at the store and not just drop them off and pick up the money later), at 5 rue Sazzarin, Gibert Joseph. It is possible that some books considered as saleable on the site, may not be taken back to the store. But by selling directly to the store (and not sending your package), at least you get back the books that aren’t accepted, free of charge.
- With the books not sold at Gibert Joseph, try your luck at Gibert Jeune who may possibly take them.
- Sell the rest on Momox (shipping via parcel). Attention, there have been several complaints about this site (non-payment, lost packages, or books in excellent condition but considered damaged…), but I was paid correctly. I think it’s still interesting to sell to them, but by grouping all unsold items and sending them in one go. If you get paid, so much the better, if not so much the worse, your first objective is to get rid of them, isn’t it?
- If there are still items left (not taken back at both Momox and Gibert), go to the Boulinier store and sell them for 10 cents
- Otherwise, you can always give them away
- A Recycle Livre, an eco-responsible company that collects your books from your home free of charge and then resells them on the Internet; or at one of the collection points. All this for the benefit of associations fighting against illiteracy and in favor of the environment
- At Bibliothèque sans Frontières, in one of the collection points
- Au Secours Populaire
- On recupe.net
- In front of Gibert, there are often people who pick up books that you can’t sell.
- To people who come to buy things from you, they will be less concerned about the quality of the cover or the rating of the DVDs.
- I put the unsold books in front of the elevator in my building, and my neighbors took them all
