My criteria for choosing a cell phone
Small article which has as main interest to serve me as a reminder. Before I became a nomad, I used my cell phone very little, being behind my computer most of the time. I had a smartphone, like everyone else, but didn’t attach much importance to it.Since I’m nomadic, I’m outside much more often and need a better cell phone (I’m handicapped without Google Map). For a long time, I found it hard to accept paying a lot for a smartphone and ended up with cheap, slow phones with little memory space…I have a computer and an Apple tablet but for the phone, I still prefer an Android. After several failed attempts, here is a list of criteria that I now consider important:
- Fingerprint unlocking (preferably on the back)
- Minimum 5.5 inch screen
- 3500 mAh minimum battery for a large autonomy (removable if possible to replace it when it is worn out)
- Hard disk of 128 GB minimum
- If possible, micro SD reader
- Minimal Android overlay
- Supports the latest version of Android
- Best possible camera (with wide angle optics)
- USB-C charging
- Bonus: double SIM
- To privilege a known brand (Samsung, Huawei, …) to be able to be serviced anywhere in the world in case of problems
To prepare for the future :
- 5G support
- ESIM support
I bought the Huawei Mate 9 in November 2017 in Seville and I am very happy with it…After my phone was stolen in Medellin, I bought the Huawei P30 in October 2019. The only defect I find in it is that the unlocking by fingerprint is done on the front, I found it much more practical on the back. Otherwise it is perfect and the quality gain of the camera is quite amazing.
