8 Ideas for keeping busy during Containment #coronavirus

The confinement will be long and boring. So that you can take advantage of it to do something positive and enjoyable, here is my list of ideas. Beware, my suggestions are completely subjective, these are the things that interest me too 😀 so if we have the same tastes, here is my list :

1.Learn something

Masterclass : I told you about MasterClass, the platform for online celebrity courses. It’s the Netflix of online courses wholesale. Everything is in the form of videos, with workbooks that you can download to do exercises at home. If the courses are in English, everything is subtitled and filmed in a super professional way. You can learn how to cook but also how to take beautiful pictures or become an actor. You can read my detailed review here.

Learning new languages: I speak 4 languages of which 3 are fluent. In my opinion, it is important to know the basic grammar rules and then learn the vocabulary. Here are my tips for :

Learning to code: the OpenClassRooms site is superb. If you have never coded before, start with un petit cours sur l’algorithme first, before choosing your programming language. To make the web, I recommend HTML, CSS, PHP & JavaScript.

Learning how to manage Google Ads campaigns: before, I was a community manager. I took advantage of the end of a work contract to learn how to manage Google Ads campaigns and break into this new job. Having no experience in managing Adwords campaigns, I had to prove that I was able to understand what I was going to be given as tasks. I obtained the Google Ads certification on my own (passing both levels of testing with flying colors) in only 2 weeks – the tests are difficult and for someone who has never launched campaigns before, these results were impressive for recruiters and I was hired on a permanent basis whereas the only campaign I launched – to learn – cost me 50€ (including 25€ offered by Google). To pass the Google certifications, c’est par ici

2.Doing sports or yoga

I am a sport disabled person, but there are certain forms of sport that I tolerate. I love the very easy yoga videos on the Doctissimo site. My favorite is this one: to extend the neck and shoulder muscles.

For those wishing to take courses, there are many on Instagram. No need to follow the live broadcasts because the reruns are then available on IGTV, but if you like the discipline, here are the schedules & accounts to follow :

3.Getting started with DIY

strands of lily of the valley that I made during confinement

DIY encompasses a whole range of activities but what I have been passionate about for years is paper cutting. It’s easy to carry around the world, you can find it everywhere. With paper and scissors you can do a lot of things. If you don’t have paper, you can use old newspapers or your baking paper.

What I’m working on right now is this DIY proposed by Zack Mclaughlin: Barn Owl (link & tutos). He is known and recognized for his very realistic birds. He is also a great teacher. His explanations are very clear and he knows how to guide even beginners to follow the tutorial step by step. This owl is a gift he gives to the community of paper art fans during the confinement. A very generous gift that can keep you busy for hours.

I advise you to print the templates in A3. If your printer does not allow it, print on two A4 sheets. The templates just serve as a guide, there is no impact if you don’t have A3 sheets.

You can follow the artist and admire his work on Instagram as well

4.Doing personal development

Here you will find all my favorite self-help books. A podcast that I like a lot is Change Ma Vie de Clotilde Dusoulier

5.Spring cleaning

This is the best time to follow the Marie Kondo Method, which consists in getting rid of the superfluous and keeping only what makes us happy. In order not to overload the garbage garbage cans unnecessarily, I advise you to make three boxes: to throw away / to give / to sell. That you will get rid of once the confinement is over. Here are my tips for throwing away / giving / sellingeverything.

Attention Marie Kondo has written several books, the ones I recommend you are :

6. Change your life

After reading Marie Kondo’s book, one of the side effects is the desire to change one’s life: D because some people realize that their current life does not make them happy.

7. Travel virtually

On this blog, we have nearly 1000 articles on travel, covering more than 40 countries. Choose the country you are interested in here to access our travel diaries & practical guides.

8. Watch movies & series

I think everyone is doing it. But I’m just going to suggest some movies and series that I like.
I really like series with period costumes, adaptations of novels – or about serial killers.

  • Series with period costumes (in order of preference)
    • Rome : an HBO series, with a very clever script and beautiful sets
    • North & South : a kind of Pride & Prejudice but in mini-series
    • Pride & Prejudice: the BBC version with Colin Firth
    • The Tudors: the 2nd season is the best, the actors are well known and superb
    • Downton Abbey: no longer presented
    • Le Parfum: German series produced by Netflix. Unbearable suspense, serial killers, absolutely brilliant script, superb actors, twist plot at the end(link)
    • L’Amie Prodigieuse: new series available on Canal+, adaptation of the eponymous saga by Elena Ferrante
    • Mrs. Maisel, fabulous woman: series produced by Amazon, whose actress Rachel Brosnahan (who played a small role in House of Cards) I really appreciate the humor of the series and the magnificent costumes.
    • Empresses in the Palace : Chinese series, well written script, available on Netflix(link)
    • The Bazaar of Charity: a very well done French series
    • Versailles : series produced by Canal+ but the actors are English-speaking to better broadcast the series abroad. Available on Netflix
    • The Pillars of the Earth (adaptation of Ken Follett’s novel) and its sequel (less well, World without End)
    • The White Queen (adaptation of Philippa Gregory’s novels) and its sequels (less well, The White Princess & The Spanish Princess)
    • Mad Men looks at itself well during this period of confinement, with its very slow rhythm, its deep uneasiness, a certain nostalgia for the past
    • The Witcher: for the beautiful eyes of Henri Cavill
    • The Borgias: I only recommend the 1st season
    • exceptionally this series has no period costumes but I really liked the saga The Purge so : The Purge (series produced by Amazon), the two seasons are independent, I advise you to watch only season 2
  • Movies :
    • Korean director Park Chan-wook ‘s films: extremely disturbing scenarios but with lots of plot twists. The beginnings of his films are always boring but we understand the importance of every detail at the very end. Sensitive souls abstain. If you like Park Chan-wook, you will love Parasite of Bong Joon-ho.
    • The Saw saga includes 7 movies in all I think, but the first movie is still the best: Saw (2004)
    • Of course, we won’t forget the saga: The Lord of the Rings in its long version. I had the chance to visit Hobbiton in New Zealand and a copy in Guatemala – and I watch these three films regularly.
    • 500 Days of Summer: a film I watch at least every year. I really like the editing of this film. There have been lots of articles and essays on the characters in the film, on the end of the film etc. I’m very happy with the editing of this film. As the voice-over said in the film, it’s not a love story, but the story of a love story.
    • Mulholland Drive: is a film to be watched several times to understand all its nuances. I always feel a deep sadness when I watch it, maybe it’s not the best film to cheer me up
    • Two films on pandemics if you like to scare yourself: Contagion on the fictitious MEV-1 virus and the Korean film Pandemic (2013) on the possible contagion of H1N1. Pandemic is scary but Contagion is even scarier because it’s too realistic (the screenwriter was advised by real epidemiologists – and there are a lot of similarities with what we’re experiencing right now).
