Test and Reviews of the Apple Magic Keyboard: the best mobile keyboard for the Mac
The Apple Magic Keyboard is usually sold for €99. In July 2018, I found it brand new for €85 on Amazon. Click here to see the current price.
Having a nomadic lifestyle, I have to constantly adapt to new work spaces. In Budapest, I started to experience back pain and realized that I needed to optimize the ergonomics of my workspace.
I purchased a Nexstand support to raise my computer and I needed an external keyboard. I was in Asia at that time, it was impossible to find an AZERTY keyboard. So I temporarily bought a cheap QWERTY keyboard. While in France, I replaced it with the overpriced Apple Magic Keyboard (Amazon link)
Psychologically, I find it very difficult to buy a simple keyboard for almost 100 € but as they say: “The price is forgotten, the quality remains”. This is very true for the Magic Keyboard which is incredibly comfortable to use.
The Apple Magic Keyboard clutter
As I travel a lot, I chose the version without number pad to limit the clutter. The Magic Keyboard is a bluetooth keyboard, the absence of wire makes it easier to move around.
Its dimensions are as follows:
- Width: 27.9 cm
- Depth: 11.49 cm
- Height: 0.41 to 1.09 cm
- Weight: 0.231 kg
As it is never easy to realize, here are some pictures to have elements of comparison.

Incredible autonomy
That’s really what impressed me with the Magic Keyboard, its battery has an incredible autonomy! I didn’t measure its autonomy precisely but I recharge it a handful of times each year. So it easily lasts several weeks without having to plug it in
Knowing that I use it quite intensively for several hours a day and never turn it off. The keyboard automatically goes into sleep mode after a certain amount of time without use and reactivates itself as soon as you press a key
When you need to recharge it, simply plug in the keyboard using a Thunderbolt cable. If you connect it to your Mac, you can continue to use it in wired mode, without bluetooth.
A great comfort of use
The Magic Keyboard offers the same ergonomics as Macbook keyboards with the “scissor keyboard” (before the “butterfly keyboard” generation)
It is of course a matter of taste but I particularly appreciate it, the typing is precise, reliable and not very noisy.
Since I had a problem with the butterfly keyboard on my new Macbook just a few months after I bought it, I’m fine with it.
Very practical in mobility
The Magic Keyboard fits easily into a backpack or suitcase because of its small size.
You can easily connect it to a tablet or mobile if you want to do without the computer.
On the iPad, once a keyboard is connected, the numeric keypad no longer appears on the screen, saving a large portion of the screen.

I recommend this keyboard to nomads. It’s a small investment, of course, but with a screen enhancer, you will gain in comfort and it will allow you to work from your Airbnb, without having to pay for a coworking space.
