Heymondo review: is this travel insurance worth it?
We can’t stress it enough: your health is too precious to skimp on. Even if your bank card might cover you for the first 3 months of your trip (but do check the conditions), you won’t be covered beyond that.
I know this all too well—I was glad to have travel insurance when I had emergency surgery in Vietnam last year.
While travel insurance covering long trips of one or two years has been around for a while, there are still few policies tailored to travelers who are truly on the road long-term, leaving without a return date in mind.
That’s exactly our situation as digital nomads on the road since 2016; we’ve had to juggle multiple policies since they usually only cover us for up to two consecutive years.
Heymondo offers several plans depending on the type of trip: short stay, cancellation, multi-trip. This review focuses on the long-stay plan, the one suited to digital nomads who leave without a return date.
Who is behind Heymondo?
One thing I’ve learned from my experience with several insurers is to always check who the actual underwriter is behind the “brand.”
Indeed, many travel insurance names are really just commercial brands, or insurance brokers. The actual insurer is sometimes a foreign company that is hard to reach and offers no support in your own language.
Trust me, I’ve been there: it’s invaluable, when you’re in a hospital bed, to be able to easily reach someone who speaks your native language 🙂
Behind Heymondo there is a real insurer, not just a website: the policies are underwritten by established insurance partners, and those partners differ depending on your country of residence. Open the policy wording for your own country before subscribing, because that is where the actual insurer and the assistance provider are named.
Plus point: Heymondo displays a WhatsApp number on its site. That is genuinely useful, because calling an emergency line back home from abroad can be extremely expensive if you have not planned for it.
So I ran a little test by trying to contact them:

Leaving the automated first reply aside, a real person, not a bot, answered in barely a minute. Our test was run in French, as the screenshot shows, but the takeaway holds: there is a human at the other end, and quickly.
I didn’t try reaching out outside their business hours, but this first test inspires confidence.
The app lets you call the assistance line via the internet (so “for free”), which is another big plus.

What coverage does Heymondo offer?
Insurance policies have an annoying habit of being hard to decipher.
So I’ve made it a habit to focus on the key points.
Repatriation coverage
This is one of the most critical points: after a serious accident requiring repatriation to your home country, a medical aircraft and medical staff have to be chartered, which runs into tens of thousands of euros. A travel insurance policy absolutely must cover this.
Heymondo covers repatriation at actual cost, no issues there.
Serious medical expenses
The other essential detail: what’s the maximum amount the insurance covers in case of a serious accident requiring hospitalization?
This amount is €300,000 with Heymondo. That will be more than enough to cover the most serious cases anywhere in the world.
It might be a bit tight for the United States or Canada, where healthcare costs can be outrageous. Some insurers charge more for these destinations and provide coverage with a cap of up to €1 million.
Liability
Liability breaks down into two components:
- Property damage liability: if you set fire to your hotel room, for example
- Bodily injury liability: if you have a car accident that injures or kills someone, for example.
Heymondo’s coverage is up to €100,000, which is less than what most travel insurance policies offer.
Reimbursement for medical consultations
These are “standard” medical consultations, if you’re sick and need medication. Since the amounts involved are much smaller, I don’t think it’s essential for a travel insurance policy to cover these costs; it would just be the icing on the cake.
Heymondo covers these expenses.
Dental costs
Heymondo covers emergency dental costs up to €300.
Extreme sports and high mountains
This is an important point to check if you’re visiting mountainous countries like Nepal, Peru, Bolivia, etc. Many insurance policies don’t cover high mountains, which they define as starting at “4000 meters”. That altitude is very easy to reach in some countries (La Paz airport, the capital of Bolivia, is at 4,062 meters above sea level, for example).
Heymondo covers up to 5,400 meters, which is excellent.

And the exclusions

How much does Heymondo insurance cost?
Heymondo offers 90-day policies that you can renew up to a maximum of one year.
So here are the rates for one person over a year.
| Coverage zone | Annual rate per person |
|---|---|
| Worldwide | 807 € |
| Europe | 621 € |
It doesn’t seem possible to choose the “Worldwide except USA and Canada” option, which many insurers offer and which helps lower the bill.
Of course, you can select one or more countries, set the trip duration, and add the number of travelers; just run a simulation.
Heymondo reviews: what policyholders say
Our verdict rests on three things: a line-by-line reading of the cover, a real test of the customer service, and the feedback left by policyholders. The Trustpilot ratings are reassuring.

Which isn’t always the case when it comes to travel insurance…
