My opinion on the Logitech MX Ergonomic Mouse: Trackball and Vertical at the same time

Working as a nomad requires us to constantly reorganize our workspace according to what we find in our Airbnb. If we select accommodations that seem to have a table and chairs that are more or less comfortable, the photos don’t tell the whole story and it’s only once we get there that we have the moment of truth

In Budapest, Hungary, our chairs were not comfortable and we started to have back pain. We found refuge in a great coworking place close to our home. In Osaka in Japan, the table was too low and my neck hurt from bending my head down towards my screen.

On top of that, I was already quite prone to wrist pain and arm tendonitis

As it isn’t possible to carry around the table and seat of our dreams in our suitcase, we started to seriously think about optimizing the ergonomics of our workstation.

Two objects have been game changed and have significantly improved my comfort:

  • A NexStand to raise my computer and place the screen at eye level.
  • An ergonomic mouse: the Logitech MX Ergo(Amazon link). It’s an investment (a little less than 100 €) but it’s not much for an object that you have thousands of hours of use every year.

The 4 problems of classic mice

Classic mice have four big problems:

  • They impose to keep the hand flat. It is an unnatural awkward posture that causes tension in the wrist. In the long term, this can cause very painful injuries.
  • To move the mouse cursor, you have to make a lateral arm movement. The repetition of these movements can again, in the long term, cause very disabling muscle disorders. This is also known as repetitive motion syndrome
  • They need a relatively large free surface to be able to move the cursor.
  • Their optical system often makes them unusable on glass surfaces

The Logitech MX Ergo mouse fixes all these problems

The Logitech Mouse is a vertical mouse that allows the wrist to adopt a much more natural posture, greatly reducing tension. Note that a very clever magnetic mechanism makes it possible, if one prefers, to use it with a more classic flat position.

This is a Trackball mouse: you don’t move the mouse by arm movements but by rolling a sphere with your thumb. Quite frankly, I was quite skeptical before I started, I must admit that it’s quite disconcerting to change my habits after years of using a classic mouse. You grope at the beginning and you lack precision. But you get used to it very quickly and I think I was fully operational after two or three days. But you’re still slightly less precise than with a regular mouse. For those who need to be very precise (those who do photo retouching, for example), Logitech has thought of a solution: with your thumb, you can press a button that will activate or deactivate a “high precision” mode that considerably reduces the cursor’s movement speed. Personally, I never need to activate this mode.

Since you no longer need to make lateral movements to move the cursor (you do it with trackball), you can be satisfied with a much smaller surface. I even used the mouse on my thigh.

It isn’t an optical mouse, so it will work on all surfaces without exception.

A wireless mouse with a very large autonomy

The battery life is so long that I forget that this is a wireless mouse that works with a battery. The rare times in a year when the battery is exhausted, I wonder what happens!

It was important for me not to have a battery-powered mouse for fear of being stranded. The Logitech MX Ergo can be charged with a standard mini-USB cable

Conclusion

As you can see, my first experience with an ergonomic mouse is a real little revelation.

If there are ergonomic mice that are ONLY vertical or ONLY with trackball, the Logitech MX Ergo brings the two worlds together and I would find it hard to do without it.
