Gelateria La Romana: the Best Ice Cream of Turin (Italy) – part 4

Italian gastronomy is pastas, pizzas and ice cream!

And indeed, there are glaciers on every corner.

As we are amateurs, we tested some of them during our walks in the city. All in all, it’s a treat every time, Italian ice creams are incomparable with those we are used to eating elsewhere.

Until you find the top of the top: Gelateria La Romana. Founded in 1947, this ice-cream parlour has become a franchise but the production remains artisanal and the ice-creams are a KILLDOWN!

The address is : Via Santa Teresa, 6. Keep it well to yourself!

Most of the brand’s stores are in Italy but there are a few stores in Spain and Austria.

I am announcing that when we stop traveling with Anh, I am a candidate to launch the franchise in France!

The store is open every day from noon to 11pm or midnight depending on the day, so I can tell you that I enjoyed going there regularly.

If you go there on the weekend, chances are there will be a lot of people and it will be a bit of anarchy.

So I explain the principle so that you aren’t lost.

You must first queue at the checkout on the right to choose what you want. Don’t choose the tastes at that moment, just say what you want (an ice cream, a pancake, a yoghurt, …) and the size.

Tonight it was raining so there weren’t many people

The staff is charming and patient with foreigners, most employees speak English or even French but it’s more fun to make the effort in Italian.

For ice cream there are 4 sizes available: small, medium, large or maxi with 2, 3, 4 and 5 flavors respectively (with one less flavor if you choose to have whipped cream).

Don’t crack and take the maximum size, don’t crack…

Once you have made your choice, you collect a ticket and wait for someone to be available to serve you.

The first thing to do is to indicate whether you want a cone or a cut(cono or coppetta).

Then to indicate the perfumes that you wish. This isn’t very easy since, unlike most glaciers in France, the jars aren’t opened and therefore you cannot see them (to keep the ice cream in good condition, the lid is closed each time). Raise your head and all the tastes are displayed … in Italian.

The available fragrances are displayed on slates in height

Don’t hesitate to innovate and change your habits, I am conservative with ice cream and I started with classic vanilla/chocolate. A nice employee then made me test a small piece of 2 other flavors. I can tell you that after that, I tested a lot of different tastes!

If you wish to choose at your leisure, the complete list of fragrances is here: https: //www.gelateriaromana.com/en/cat0_6657-the-tastes-of-tradition.php. 100% of the perfumes aren’t permanently available however but there is plenty to choose from!

Unfortunately, I haven ‘t tested everything, but here are some of my favorite tastes:

Another difference with glaciers in France is that the quantities are super generous! Where you’re used to having little balls, here it’s the whole container that is filled and it overflows on all sides.

I didn’t crack, I didn’t take “Maxi”, only “Great”

When I tell you it’s spilling over on all sides!

After that, all you have to do is enjoy yourself!

Gelateria La Romana also offers cakes that look delicious, I didn’t have the opportunity to test, I have enough to do with ice cream 🙂

When you’re there and you’ve succumbed to these delicious ice creams.

Please don’t send me a picture, I’ll be jealous! 😀

EDIT October 2020 : Two years later, we are in Rome and we discover with joy that there are four locations of Gelateria La Romana! And it’s as good as we remember! After testing many glaciers, we still consider that the best ice cream is there 🙂

You can request a map in English to help you make your choice.
