[SOLVED] Problem with Macbook Air randomly restarting by itself

After I got my MacBook back from repair, it started crashing and restarting randomly on its own

The problem suddenly occurred during a normal use: the screen would freeze before rebooting by itself.

I don’t know if it’s related, but the problem started when I started using my MacBook Air with an external display, something I’d never done before.

My device is a MacBook Air 13″ generation 2018 with two Thunderbolt 3 ports.

After some research, I discovered that a similar problem is documented by Apple ( on this page)

On this page, it talks about the shutdown of a MacBook Pro 13″ generation 2019 with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, which is very similar to my device.

The proposed solution seemed dubious to me :

  • Step 1: If the battery charge is over 90%, continue to step 2. Otherwise, use the computer until the battery charge drops below 90%.
  • Step 2: Plug the Mac into the power outlet
  • Step 3: Close all applications
  • Step 4: Close the computer cover to put it into sleep mode
  • Step 5: Let the Mac reload for at least 8 hours
  • Step 6: Update macOS if it isn’t yet at the latest version.

In my case, I already had the latest version of macOS (Catalina) and I was struggling to understand how this procedure could solve my problem. However, it seems to have worked, the computer hasn’t rebooted unintentionally since then. I’m touching wood!

Apple’s procedure specifies that if the problem persists, you should contact support.

Good luck!
