Having entered Argentina by land from Bolivia, I didn’t get the chance to see the SIM card offers at the airport.

Buying a SIM card in town
As is the case almost everywhere in South America, it’s very easy to spot small shops selling SIM cards.
In our case, it was in Salta. Besides selling SIM cards, the vendor’s little shop offered sandwiches, drinks, cigarettes, phone battery recharging, currency exchange… and surely plenty of other things!
The conversation wasn’t easy, and the price changed three times along the way 😀
We had two options:
- Either a SIM card from the carrier Claro
- Or a SIM card from the carrier Personal!
According to the vendor, a Claro SIM card requires an activation that isn’t convenient for foreigners, so we chose Personal!
Indeed, no activation needed—the SIM card works right away, and you don’t even have to show your passport!
In the end, we paid in January 2024:
- 3,000 ARS for the SIM card
- 1,950 ARS for a package giving us 1GB of internet, unlimited calls and WhatsApp for 30 days
I think the vendor skimmed a little since this package normally costs 1,500 ARS. But hey, we’re not going to sweat 35 euro cents.
Buying the package wasn’t strictly necessary since the card comes with a basic 1GB credit.
