This is the latest release from The Ordinary. Following complaints from people who would have loved a niacinamide serum but who don’t like the 1% Zinc in the serum Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, The Ordinary has just released its powder, containing 100% niacinamide.

What’s it for?

Let’s just remind ourselves what niacinamide does:

Niacinamide is a water-soluble B3 vitamin, ultra-hydrating. It improves the skin’s barrier function by stimulating the synthesis of lipids, limiting water loss and fighting dryness. It stimulates collagen production (reduces wrinkles), has an anti-inflammatory effect (against acne), and reduces and regulates melanin production (great for dark spots).

With the serum Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% from the same brand, here’s the result after 6 months => my skin really loves niacinamide

Why buy the powder?

Some people don’t like the 1% Zinc in the Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% serum and get severe purging (lots of breakouts), instead of having nice skin.

I don’t have any problem with the zinc, but I bought the powder version anyway.

First, to give you feedback.
Second, the powder form will last me longer.
And finally, this format will let me travel with fewer products.

Yes, instead of taking the 60ml glass bottle with me all the time, I just take the 20g pot, which is lighter. Plus, the powder is to be used with a serum, so instead of slathering on 2 serums: Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% and Buffet + Copper Peptides 1%, now I just slather on Buffet + Copper Peptides 1% mixed with a 1/4 spoon of niacinamide.

I really like the packaging, already. It’s classy. The cap screws onto the pot perfectly, unlike the other caps at The Ordinary.

When you open it for the first time, there’s a protective layer. Personally, I keep it, since I travel a lot, so the powder doesn’t get everywhere.

How to use it?

Mix a quarter of the included spoon with a water-based serum in the palm of your hand.
Apply to the face morning and/or evening.
Avoid the eye area and rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs.
Wash your hands after use.
Do not mix with formulations that have a pH equal to or lower than 5.

The Ordinary recommends mixing with one of the following products:

Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (I don’t like this serum at all, my review here)
Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA (I’ve never tried it)
“Buffet” + Copper Peptides 1% (I really really like it, The Ordinary link)
Matrixyl 10% + HA (I’ve never tried it)
Argireline Solution 10% (I’ve never tried it)

A plastic spoon is provided. You can see that the powder only fills half the jar. But they still insist on giving us a big jar, probably so we can store the spoon in it ??

It is however very hard to perfectly measure the amount to use. They should have made the spoon correspond to the recommended amount, instead of forcing us to figure out what 1/4 of the spoon is. It’s completely stupid!

I use the powder with Buffet + Copper Peptides 1% (The Ordinary link).

Why? Niacinamide regulates excess sebum, so it can be drying sometimes. Mixing it with a water-based hydrating serum with peptides and amino acids keeps the skin hydrated.

Here, I’m showing you 1/4 spoon of niacinamide powder with 1 drop of Buffet + Copper Peptides 1%. The powder is super super fine, so don’t mix it in a windy place.

Once mixed, the niacinamide is completely dissolved in the serum, with no trace of powder left. And here’s my well-hydrated hand 😀

Results

Personally, I see no difference with the Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% serum. My skin loves it.

I’ll finish my Niacinamide serum, and then I’ll switch completely to the powder.
