Bolt: Review and promo code 15 € (March 2020) of the VTC application (ex Taxify)

Bolt, formerly called Taxify (and even Txfy in France for not having “Taxi” in its name) is a service of VTC, competitor of Uber and other Kapten.
Bolt is an Estonian company that first developed in Eastern Europe. It was in Bucharest, Romania, that I first heard about it and started to use this service.
Bolt is now available in France (in Paris and Lyon). Bolt is present in 50 cities in 30 countries
In Paris, the Bolt application also allows the use of electric scooters (a service I have not tested).
Didi (the “Chinese Uber”) has also acquired a stake in Bolt, which bodes well for future developments.
The application is very classic and does not really differentiate itself from its competitors.
To register, as usual, you have to enter your credit card number.
You are geolocalized and only have to fill in your destination address. Bolt will then give you the price of the race as well as an estimate of the waiting time.
You can choose between several types of vehicles:
- Bolt: which corresponds to classic cars
- Green: which corresponds to electric cars
- Sedan: which corresponds to high-end cars
- Van: which allows to take more passengers
When it was launched in Paris, Bolt offered very aggressive pricing and was therefore much cheaper than Uber. The rates now look very similar to Uber’s.
However, Bolt continues to offer regular discounts (without being asked for them) which are quite appreciable.
On top of that, Bolt only takes 15% commission on the race where Uber takes 25%, which helps to offer a better remuneration to the drivers.
Another feature that can be interesting: it is possible to use Bolt without a credit card. All you have to do is select “Cash” in the payment methods. Practical for those who are afraid to fill in their credit card on an application.
So far I have used Bolt in Bucharest, Romania, Mexico City, Mexico and Paris, France and have never had any unpleasant surprises.
