Success in 10 steps: excerpt from “Map of Consciousness”

Map of Consciousness is the latest book by psychiatrist David Hawkins. It’s a synthesis of his 16 books as well as his interviews. In this book, he explains his map of human consciousness. Today, we’re just going to focus on his 10 tips for success. The other, more spiritual messages can be explored further by reading the book (Amazon link).

Step 1: Intention

Have good intentions. If your business adheres to a universal principle, if it helps people achieve their own goals, it will have a universal impact.

Steps 2 & 3: Pleasure & usefulness

Do what you LOVE to do and what people NEED

You just have to ask yourself: “Am I imposing my preference, or does what I offer truly meet the needs of the people I interact with?”

A while ago, I used to go sometimes at noon to a restaurant where everything was homemade: quiches, salads, desserts. It was delicious, but even for me, who doesn’t eat much, I was hungry afterward. I mentioned it very friendly to the owner, saying that for the price (twice as much as the same menu at the bakery), it would be nice to add just two leaves of salad because the quantity was insufficient. She took it very badly and told me she preferred, on the contrary, “small portions”. People don’t seem to share her opinion because the restaurant closed a few months later.

Did it meet needs? Partly, because it was delicious and homemade. But people came to not be hungry anymore šŸ˜€

Step 4: The 5 senses

Research in neuro-linguistic programming reveals that, on the whole, people favor one sensory channel to integrate their experiences.

You must make sure to take into account the sensory channels you don’t favor.

After the work on a massage salon, I visited the place. This time, the place did everything to awaken the 5 senses, and I saw a huge difference even though the massage was just as excellent.

The book states: Many potential customers leave a store because they didn’t find a chair there. A lot of people need to sit down to think before making a purchase.

Well! I told JB about it, and he told me he hates shopping and while accompanying me on shopping trips, if the store had a chair, he could have sat down and let me shop longer, and buy more.

In class, an ad agency came to tell us about their success. The agency boss told us he had invested in a very, very expensive coffee machine. But he aims for an unprecedented taste experience for his clients. According to him, clients sign with him to taste the best coffee in the world (and for his good services too).

Step 5: Attraction

Focus on attraction rather than advertising.

Attract and build your success through your reputation.

If you do good work, people will seek you out.

The best advertising is a satisfied customer

We’re bad salespeople, but clients come to us because someone recommended us. When they come to see us, it’s not to negotiate the price, but to solve a problem, and we are their solutions. The balance of power is different.

I know many freelancers sign contracts and then hand them off to a subcontractor. I don’t know if you believe it or not, but everything in the book indicates that people don’t necessarily know it consciously, but they know it unconsciously. Act as if your clientele knew what’s going on. When someone replaces me on vacation and charges less than me, I tell the client and charge exactly what it cost me. I don’t try to go on vacation and pocket the difference on top. Small gains of the moment can cost dearly in the long run. It only takes the subcontractor to make a mistake, but in your name, and your reputation will be tarnished.

In an interview, the author gives tips to advertisers:

Instead of paying a model who pretends to “testify”, it’s better to have a real customer testify. The unconscious knows how to recognize real testimonials! I’ve done reviews for very competitive products like Airpods and I’ve sold a lot, because you can see that I really use them and appreciate them. And that I’m not paid, like a journalist, to list specs.

The Aubade campaign worked very well, not only because the photos were very pretty and the puns very funny, but because the women in the photos were ordinary people who loved the brand, not models! You didn’t know it consciously, but your unconscious knows it and appreciates their ad campaign.

Step 6: Reliability

Consistency and reliability are paramount.

You can’t have a store that opens its doors only when the boss is in a good mood. A store will quickly go bankrupt if it’s open only on weekdays and closes at 5 p.m.

People really appreciate convenience and reliability.

If a report has to be sent on a Monday and you promised it, do everything you can to send it on Monday.

When you receive an email, reply to the email—it’s simple, but a lot of people don’t do it. Americans don’t have this notion of “following up with someone.”

Step 7: Nobility

Those who attack human dignity and seem to benefit from it can project a positive image for a while, but when you look at their lives in detail as they evolve, the devastation is staggering and beyond comprehension.

There may be a market for grim products, but let’s not encourage human perversity. You risk paying with your karma.

Step 8: Quality

We attract what we prioritize. No one can serve two masters.

You don’t become strong by feeding on human weakness. You become dynamic when you encourage the vitality of others. You become great when you encourage greatness. You become beautiful when you highlight the beauty of life.

Step 9: Sharing

Recognize that the path to success is sharing that success with others.

You make lifelong enemies when you refuse to acknowledge the people who are partly responsible for our triumphs.

How many stars leave their wives when success is on the agenda? Even though it’s their wives who encouraged and provided the finances all those years so they could achieve success?

Step 10: Generosity

To receive, you must give. And you always receive more than you give. I’m not necessarily talking about money—giving money is easy, but giving love is much harder.

You strengthen in yourself what you strengthen in others.

Support the success of others in every possible way. Acknowledge and appreciate their achievements. Be happy for them because it’s just proof that if they can do it, you can too. Through this approach, you develop a “giving” attitude rather than a “taking” one.
