Why get insured when traveling?
There are many insurance options available to cover expenses related to flight delays, lost luggage, theft or phone damage, etc…
While these situations are unpleasant, they are manageable and it is not always necessary to take out insurance for these events.
However, it is important to plan for the most serious situations, such as a scooter accident requiring emergency surgery or repatriation.
These costs can amount to tens of thousands of euros and in some countries, you have to pay before receiving care.
It’s not pleasant to think about when preparing a trip, but it’s important to remember that it can happen to anyone, as it happened to me in Vietnam.
Am I covered by French health insurance?
It is possible to continue to be covered by French health insurance during your trip abroad, even if you resign, for example.
It is important to ask yourself whether this insurance is sufficient for your trip, especially if you travel outside the European Union.
For trips within the EU, it is recommended to apply for a European Health Insurance Card before leaving.
According to the information available on the Assurance Maladie website, this is not enough for trips outside the EU.

The term “possibly” plays a crucial role. In an emergency situation that requires hospitalization or repatriation, it is important to understand that health insurance does not cover these costs. You must therefore bear them yourself and submit a reimbursement claim once the situation is resolved, knowing that there is no guarantee it will be accepted.
Am I covered by my bank card?
There are many bank cards that include travel insurance, but it is important to check the limits of this coverage.
Generally, these insurances only cover hospitalization and repatriation costs for the first 90 days of travel.
For longer trips or additional coverage, it may be necessary to take out additional travel insurance. It is important to read the terms and conditions of the insurance carefully to know if you must have paid for your trip with the bank card to be covered, and if you are covered if the trip has already started.
It is also possible to reduce costs by taking out specific insurance only after the first 90 days of travel. In this case, you need to be careful about any waiting period.
Examples of MondialCare rates
Here are some simulations for coverage by MondiaCare travel insurance.
12 months of travel for a 35-year-old (excluding USA and Canada): €799

30 days of travel in the United States for a 35-year-old: €164

What coverage with MondialCare?
Here is a summary of the guarantees.

If we go into a bit more detail, what is really important to me:
- The hospital expenses cap
- The repatriation costs cap
- The liability cap
- As a bonus: reimbursement of “standard” health expenses (doctor, medication, dentist, …)
With MedialCare insurance.
The hospital expenses cap is 300 000 € everywhere in the world, except in the USA and Canada where it is 700 000 €. Some insurances go up to 1 million for the USA, but this level is already very good.
Repatriation costs are not capped.
Please note, liability is only covered for trips of less than 90 days. It is capped at 2 million for bodily injury (but only €500,000 in the USA and Canada, which seems a bit low to me). €500,000 for property damage.
Everyday health expenses are reimbursed without a cap, with a deductible of €50 per claim.
Emergency dental care is reimbursed up to €200 per claim.
