Testing of station luggage lockers in Paris (France)

Arriving in Paris from Tours to attend a birthday party before going to Saint Raphael (finally cancelled because of the coronavirus), I decide to leave my suitcase in a locker, it’s the first time I use this service in a Parisian train station.

The SNCF offers a luggage deposit service in 16 stations in France. Among them: all Parisian stations (Austerlitz, Gare de l’Est, Montparnasse, Gare du Nord, Gare de Lyon).

I went to the Gare de Lyon’s locker room but the principle and the rates are the same in all SNCF locker rooms in France.

Baggage drop-off times

SNCF lockers are open 7 days a week. Schedules vary according to the stations but are very wide. In the case of the Gare de Lyon locker room, the locker rooms open at 6:15 am and close at 10 pm.

Locker dimensions

There are three different sizes:

  • Small rack: Height: 433 mm, Width: 347 mm, Depth: 824 mm
  • Medium rack: Height: 591 mm, Width: 347 mm, Depth: 824 mm
  • Large locker: Height: 908 mm, Width: 519 mm, Depth: 824 mm

The width of my suitcase was too narrow to fit in an average locker, I had to take a large one but then I had a lot (too much) of room.

Rate for deposits

The rate depends on the size of the locker.

  • Small locker : 5,50 €
  • Average locker : 7,50 €
  • Large locker : 9,50 €

This rate is for 24h indivisible. It will then be necessary to pay 5 € for each additional 24 hours.

The maximum period of custody is 3 days.

At the time of payment, you will receive a ticket that you must keep as it will be used to open the locker. Please note that in case of loss, you will have to pay a 22 € restitution fee.

Method of payment

These are automatic lockers that work with coins (and need to be topped up).

A machine allows to exchange banknotes for coins.

However, it isn’t possible to pay by credit card, so please make sure you have cash.

What about security?

It seemed very good to me.

The access to the room where the lockers are located is controlled, and all luggage must be scanned

The lockers seem very solid, I felt comfortable enough to leave my laptop in them.

On the other hand, the SNCF does not assume any responsibility in case of loss or theft contrary to other services such as Nannybag or Vertoe which provide a guarantee.
